5.0 out of 5 stars Tells the Full Story of the Fire, December 25, 2002

One interesting fact about the fire is that it was both the first and last of its kind of disaster. It was one of the first great calamities of the modern industrial age and yet Chicago was one of the last cities to burn down naturally without help from earthquakes or bombing. Although the catastrophe has been described countless times in many books and articles, few get beyond a basic account, saying merely that Chicago caught fire and burned in October of 1871. Cromie covers the entire fire from the first flames to the relief effort that began a few days later. He tells the story of Chicagoens both rich and poor who were caught up in the fast moving drama. The book is well illustrated and will appeal to most anyone, whether they have a serious interest in the subject or just want to see some good pictures and read the captions. In some ways this book is to the Great Chicago fire what 'A Night to Remember' is to the Titanic'. I doubt anyone will be dissapointed with it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good re-telling of the Chicago disaster, March 4, 2005
    By
Bomojaz (South Central PA, USA) - See all my reviews
Cromie's book is a detailed account of the 1871 fire that destroyed much of Chicago (an even more devastating fire in terms of lives lost occurred on the very same day a few hundred miles north around Peshtigo, Wisconsin). He gives basically three reasons for the devastation: 1) the night before there was a major fire in the city that destroyed much property, knocked out fire-fighting equipment, and exhausted firefighters; 2) a relentless SW wind fanned the flames; and 3) Chicago was a city made of wood. Cromie relates quite a bit of the heroism that was displayed during the tragedy--also lots of bad behavior as well. A good historical account.

    (VINE VOICE)
A nicely written book about the great Chicago Fire of October, 1871. This book has some nice illustrations and photographs, along with some human interest stories concerning the fire. The story is compelling in how it relates the burning of this city. Only 200-300 people died as a result of this disaster. The author relates how the fire occurred in Mrs. O'Leary's barn. With some early mistakes with personnel in the fire detection system, a small fire became large because of the tardy arrival of firefighters and the brisk wind. Since the city was mostly wood, the fire blew embers over the firefighters and lighted neighborhoods beyond the fire. The firefighters had fought a fierce fire the night before, and most were very tired as they started to fight this fire. The result was a burned area one mile wide by four miles deep. Most of the business district was burned out.

This is a nice read for those with only a vague notion of the fire. Since I live in the suburbs... Read more

After searching for exercise equipment for sustained and easy workout purposes and after rejecting treadmill after treadmill I saw this and, for the price (which has since changed?), thought it was worth trying.

I have been SO HAPPY with this rebounder and am very glad I ordered it. It is heavy duty steel and has a weight limit of 300 lbs. It is a "folding" unit, though a little on the heavy side for a lady to handle... I did need a strong helper to unfold it, but I keep it set up so once was all that was needed.

For safety (and this may apply to any rebounder or trampoline), from time to time the integrity of the attachment loops should probably be checked over the months as you use this rebounder, and it is wise after every (or every other) exercise session to check the tightness of the legs, which screw on to the frame and can work loose over time with use.

I LOVE working out on this thing. It is a very gentle no-impact workout that can improve... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Sunny Fitnesses rebounder = Snapping springs., April 9, 2007
    By
Rebounders are great, I learned that in the one month I got to use this rebounder with my wife. Fun and easy to use, easy setup, just screw in the legs and you're off and running. The price also is fantastic.

The downside is that this "300 lb" rebounder snapped two springs last week. I weigh around 170 lbs and my wife weighs a lot less then that, so the snapping springs were a clear sign of the quality of this product. Factory warranty is only 30 days, good luck getting it fixed.

If you do get this rebounder, buy it here on Amazon, since this rebounder is sold under several brand names.

5.0 out of 5 stars No Pain Rebounder, December 29, 2007
Sturdy and east to store. A great way to get the heart rate up without causing pain to your knees ankles or hips. I can "run" through the morning news and weather shows and have my cardio done for the day. Great product, reasonable price.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Better than the men's...., January 27, 2011
    Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
I bought a pair of utopias at a local running store and thought they were great. Snug but allowed for movement -- just what you want for biking and rowing. I later looked inside and found.... surprise, I had bought the women's model. I gave them to my wife (who liked them, too) and then bought a pair of men's utopias. What a let down. They flapped around like pajamas. Just the thing to get caught in a chainring or irritate on a run. And that flapping material did a much poorer job of trapping heat. So I sent them back and.... bought a pair of the women's again. Not sure what to make of the added inner pad, but it doesn't slow me down and maybe keeps the boys warmer. I may have a tailor peg the leg to dude them up a bit. So, these are a great pair of running pants if your are a woman. If you are guy, buy the women's, too. Go on. Take a run on the wild side.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for cold weather running, December 6, 2010
    Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
Love these pants. I wear a 2-4 in most pants. Bought a small in these. They are snug, but not as tight as leggings. I layer them over a pair of moisture-wicking long underwear if it's <30 degrees. They are a little long on me (I have a 31" inseam), but opening the zipper at the ankle a little bit allows them to cover the top of my shoes. They are not so long that you would step on them. There is a panel of fabric behind the ankle zippers too, so even if you open them up, you won't get a draft up the leg. The zippered pocket in the back is a nice spot for an ID and key.

This review is from: Brooks Women's Utopia Thermal Pant (Apparel)
I run 3-6 miles outside in the cold and these are fabulous. I was shocked to discover how thin and unwarm other so-called cold tights are. I use these or a pair of REI tights when it is less than 25 degrees. I have not been cold in them yet. I like the reflective bars and the key pocket at the small of the back. These fit me true to size (5'7" and a size 10-12 on the bottom).
